Sacroiliac Joint

My early 2005 training in Aikido I was throw pretty good and landed hard on the left sacroiliac joint area, I could barely walk out the Dojo. Over the years working on building sites and heavy warehouse lifting my body has had it's fair share of strain.

About 7 weeks ago I woke up with a pinch nerve sensation on the left side, I usually never get but sometimes I'm a bit stiff in the morning. Did our usual Saturday morning walkabout and all seemed good till near bedtime and next morning quite bad. I felt like I had the flu and could barely move from the pain and inflammation got severe. Not sciatica, the pain in both legs was near the front area.

I had to change my sleeping position on my front to sideways with a pillow between the knees. Seemed to get better then would do something that would set it off again, twice was with extended walks, short walks were OK.

I have to now avoid doing dips/push-ups, sit-ups and back bending. Basically only the tensing type of exercises in the Atlas system, there are many I can do.

I read it can take 8 weeks to get better.

8 weeks now and on a good mend. Main thing to avoid too much walking on the street coz of foot hitting the sidewalk (that set it off twice now), treadmill with the front elevated to highest is very good as bodyweight doesn't drop hard on the front foot. Elevation 15 and 3.0 speed.

I had been doing advanced yoga with younger athletic teachers and that was leading to the strain, I'd keep up but now think better to do things on my own so I can go at my own pace and stay away from the more extreme back bend movements like wild thing or flip your dog.

Have patience and get better soon Henry.
We are lucky that we have so many exercises in the Atlas system that we can do, even when we are coping with problems like this.

The treadmill was in use the other morning, there is two beside each other but I still maintain some distance. I went on the water rower and some one leg squatting using the pulley bar on a multi exercise machine for counter balance, then went on the elliptical without using the arm upright handles just the short bar that has sensors on it. I did the fitness test and after 5 mins it gives a score, oh dear I was below average, I didn't maintain the 60 rpm so today another try and this time scored elite, I was maintaining around 62 rpm.

It must have been like 5 months ago I had that pinched nerve and inflammation, only now being back to normal, a little stiff area in the morning but otherwise good.

Things take much longer to heal as you get older.

It's been awhile getting back to Yoga since my inflamed sacrum area of 2022.

My apartment building has a PT leading Yoga in our common room Mondays and Wednesdays at 1:30 pm (free), start back into doing the hour class today and get back in the groove.
