Where I live are many way's to walkabout, there's the City streets like walking uptown, there's the paved bike/walk parkways but best are the many dirt trails around natural areas. Early Spring they can be a bit muddy but going early in the morning when it's still a chilly the ground is hard.

There are many benefits to a springtime walk. As an exercise, it will positively benefit the body, mind and soul. Being low impact, it is easy on the joints while promoting the health of the joints, muscles, heart, lungs and brain through rhythmic movement and improved circulation. The sensory organs are stimulated with the pleasant sights, sounds and fragrances of Spring. Vitamin D may be obtained from a little bit of natural sunlight while walking. This important vitamin promotes a healthy immune system, good mental health and strong bones among other things. Appreciating the beauty of creation during one’s walk shall indeed uplift the mind as well as the spirit. Walking is one of a multitude of health promoting activities that is recommended by Charles Atlas. Keep in mind that participating in a springtime walk ought to be consistent with the guidelines of the day given the perilous times we currently live in. If one can participate in a springtime walk, then one should enjoy it as the health of the body, mind and soul is being enhanced.

Nowadays because of the virus, my wife and I walk 2 hours everyday, really enjoy the dirt paths which seem to have very few people, most seem to favour the paved bike paths. Walking the uneven dirt paths works more muscle and balance.

It's that time of year, at least up here in New England, when things are getting green, pear trees are in bloom, birds are singing and some of the best things we can do are Free! Like taking a walk, brisk or slow, or a jog, or intervals of easy walking interspersed by short faster runs sometimes only 30". And of course while we're walking we can do DT. I often get up early, out the door around 5:30 - 5:40 a.m. and walk briskly while doing upper body DT exercises, then I come to a short 2 min fairly steep uphill on which I practice a variation of Exercise No. 7, Lesson 8, Part II (check it out) -- rather than do this as a stationery exercise I do it walking up the hill. These are otherwise known as "duck walks" or "lunges", and they work not only the thighs but the hips, too, and doing them provides me with a greater sense of balance and reduced chance of falling. I do them every other day as I'm almost 80 and need a day of rest after a couple sets of 20 or so of these. These really get my heart rate up, too. So this one exercise gives me lower body flexibility, strength, and balancing effort, it also provides me with aerobic exercise. You should try it! Stay safe, and stick with your DT as it can lift your spirits as well as provide the great benefits of resistance exercising. Jim
